Team Lakay tops Sen. Sonny Angara backed 38th Team Lakay Grappler’s Cup

MEDALISTS. All the athletes that garnered medals gathered together for a picture after the awarding ceremony of the 38th Lakay Grappler’s Cup.

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Team Lakay showed its mastery in the octagon ring as it won nearly half of the 23 gold at stake in the 38th Team Lakay Grapplers Cup over the weekend.

The event backed by Senator Sonny Angara saw what many consider as the best in Asia took home 11 of the 23 mints at stake with Argentinian Nahuel Gandolfi accounting for two on top of the best record of 11 seconds in submitting a foe using a guillotine choke.

Gandolfi, who won in the northern town of Kabayan early May took the top podium in the seniors male advance 65 to 71 kilogram by beating Gridlock Overlimit Jiujitsu’s Rone Decebel Deliv.

He later beat Japanese Hideshiko Nozawa of C-Gambit Jiu-jitsu to take the gold medal in the absolute men. Deliv managed a bronze medal with Deftac La Union’s Calvin Salas sharing the same honor.

Other winners for Team Lakay are Chad Mayos who beat Joh Ira Barrientos of the team’s La Union branch in the seniors male novice 58-64 kg.

Lecko Gammonac took the seniors male novice 51- 57 kgg by beating Wren Lumidao of Gridlock.

Dale Marie Mayos topped Chyrien Zoei Bacaltos of YMCA Judo Club to win the seniors female 50 kg. And below. Josh Almora proved the best in the juniors male 58-64 kg by beating Gabriel Alisto of Siam Youth Club.

Ralph Cervantes took the win by beating Quads Fitness Gym’s Charles Calawen. Cervantes was also adjudged as having the best submission by using an anaconda choke.

In the kids side, Raymond Castillo took the kids male 10-12  42 kg. and above title.

Team Lakay managed win two silver medals as well as six bronze medals with Southeast Asian ames bronze medalist Jerlyn Kingad falling to Deftac La Union’s Emily Lopez in the senjors female 55 kg and above.

Gridlock Overlimit took the second over-all crown with a 5-3-4 (gold-silver-bronze) haul including the two won by Kurt Lawrence Wagayan in the seniors male novice 72-79 kg. He also took the gold in the juniors male 72-79 kg.

Deftac La Union tied Gridlock for the numbers of gold medal but only managed another medal, a bronze, to settle for third place over-all, while Gambit Jiu jitsu came up with a 2-2-3 haul to settle for  fourth place.
