Team Lakay unveils first quarter plans

Team Lakay is gearing up for another action-packed first quarter of the year with several competitions lined – up for its seasoned and up and coming fighters.

Leading this year’s action-packed event is the staging of the grappling cup in February.

This competition will be a platform for the promising talents enrolled in Team Lakay’s Future Champions Program.

38th Grappler's Cup last July 9, 2023 at the BSU Closed Gym

As part of the team’s commitment to nurturing young talents, the tournament will provide a valuable opportunity for these emerging athletes to test their grappling skills in a competitive setting.

According to Coach Mark Sangiao, the event has helped in producing several world champions in different international mixed martial arts organizations such as ONE Championship and other MMA promotions.

Looking beyond the grappling event, Sangiao added a mixed martial arts promotion is also in the drawing boards with some of the bouts to be supervised by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB).

Sangiao said the line-up for the upcoming MMA event will soon be released but assured fight fans the competition surely keep them on the edge of their seats with fighters coming from the different gyms in the country eyed to join including foreign fighters.

Benguet Explosion: Martial Arts Tournament held last December 9, 2023 was the latest Professional MMA Event in the region.

Expected to top bill the MMA event is Jean Claude Saclag, a two – sport medalist in the Southeast Asian Games.

With a combination of striking prowess and well-rounded skills, Jean Claude is poised to become one of the most exciting fighters to watch this year.

As Team Lakay with Cong. Eric Go Yap continues to invest in the grassroots program, eyes will be on promising talents like Carlo Von Bumina-ang and Carlos Alvarez.

With their impressive showing in ONE Championship’s ONE Friday Fights, Sangiao said Alvarez and Bumina-ang are destined for bigger stages.

Bumina-ang is taking ONE by storm with three straight impressive victories, scoring knock – out wins against Reza Saedi and Ilyas Dursum last year.

Alvarez, who won all his first three bouts in the promotion was stopped in his last outing by Nachyn Sat.

But even with the loss, Sangiao said Alvarez is still upbeat of bouncing back this year as a better fighter.
